EXPERTISE AT THE SERVICE OF THE AGRICULTURAL WORLD

Avril creates the conditions for profitable and sustainable practices to support the world of agriculture and reduce dependence on imported proteins. To do this, the Group encourages virtuous farming practices, feeds animals with quality food and works to improve the health management of livestock.

  • 2.76

million tons of animal feed produced each year

  • 700,000

tons of sustainable seed sold via OleoZE in 2022

  • 80%

of French raw materials used by Avril to feed the animals

ANIMAL NUTRITION, A STRATEGIC ACTIVITY FOR THE GROUP

Animal nutrition is the chief outlet for French oilseed products (rapeseed and sunflower) and protein products (peas, flax, field beans, alfalfa, etc.). After crushing, the solid part of the seed called cake, with high nutritional value in protein, is used for animal nutrition.

Avril has been active in this business with Sanders since 2007. French leader in the sector, the company produces and markets feed that meets the specific requirements of a wide range of livestock (pigs, cattle, poultry, rabbits, etc.) as well as the requirements of the various specifications (standard, free range, label, organic).

Avril also participates in the development of new feed products with Dielna, which produces and markets liquid feeds, mainly for cattle. These feed products are used to supplement fodder and improve the nutrition and digestion of livestock.

As a partner of all agricultural models, Avril is developing an organic animal nutrition activity. Its subsidiary Oleosyn Bio was created with the cooperative Terrena to produce organic vegetable protein for the animal sectors. The Group is thus providing solutions to new expectations from society in favor of French organic food, in particular for livestock.

Organic Sector Director, Avril Livestock Business Line

"We also want to capitalize on Oleosyn Bio to structure an organic rapeseed sector that covers the whole of France. Our objective is to also use 100% of French soybean by 2026."

SOLUTIONS FOR THE MANAGEMENT & SAFETY OF LIVESTOCK

In addition to its animal nutrition activity, Avril relies on research and innovation to support farmers’ production techniques:

MIXSCIENCE:

MIXSCIENCE develops and markets a product offering in France and around the globe comprising premixes, minerals, innovative specialities and biocontrol solutions for a variety of animal species. Expert services complement this offering. MIXSCIENCE is intended for feed manufacturers, integrators and distributors involved in the animal nutrition sector. Through its innovative solutions, MIXSCIENCE plays a role in the development of economically-efficient breeding, which respects animal health and welfare, protects the environment and produces high sanitary and nutritional quality feed.

Salus:

With Salus, an entity in Brazil acquired by the Group in 2016, Avril proposes nutritional specialties and services for livestock farms. The objective: help them reach the highest standards in terms of quality, traceability and safety, in particular in the areas of cross-contamination control and laboratory services.

Striving for sustainable health management and to improve animal welfare, Avril is also active in the field of biocontrol in livestock farming via:

Nolivade:

Created in 2015 Nolivade aims to reduce the use of chemicals and antibiotics, thanks to natural solutions based on bacterial flora that address all species. This technology, now industrialized in powder form, is used in aquaculture in Vietnam for preventive digestive health applications.

VALORIZATION OF SUSTAINABLE FARMING PRACTICES

In addition to supporting market opportunities and agronomic research, Avril proposes concrete solutions for the plant world:

Feed Alliance

Feed Alliance is an Avril subsidiary expert in raw materials for animal nutrition. Trading is its business: negotiating prices, quality and origin of raw materials to best adapt to customer requirements.

Each year, Feed Alliance traders negotiate close to 5 million tons of raw materials.

Feed Alliance is the leading buyer of vegetable proteins in France and has expertise in each raw material used in animal nutrition (by-products from food industries, oils, fibers, amino acids, minerals, etc.).

Its “chameleon”-like approach involving constant adaptation, as well as support for small suppliers and valorization of locally produced raw materials, promotes the sectors with respect for people and the environment.

With the acquisition of a stake in SOLTEAM, one of the leading French importers of non-GMO, traced and guaranteed “zero deforestation” soya oilseed meals, Feed Alliance is responding to the need to secure sustainable supplies for the animal nutrition sector.

OleoZE

Saipol has created OleoZE to change cultural practices and encourage carbon storage in the soil.

OleoZE is an online marketplace for sustainable seed, which aims to reward farmers for their efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by offering them better pay.

In 2020, 2 million euros in bonuses were received by upstream agriculture, and this solution made it possible to valorize 80,000 tons of seed from sustainable farming practices.

Fabrice Moulard

farmer in Eure department and FOP administrator

"With OleoZE, it is the farmer's practice that generates financial value. Thanks to this tool, agriculture takes over and can prove its efforts for the climate."

Terrial

Terrial recycles organic by-products into fertilizers to complete or replace chemical fertilizers.
The interest of its activity is two-fold:

  • Offer an outlet to organic materials from livestock farming, in a circular economy logic,
  • Use non-fossil resources to maintain ecosystems, preserve the organic carbon stored in soils and help improve quality.

After including Suez in its capital in 2019, in 2020 Terrial structured its organic farming range, which now represents over half of sales.

With the acquisition of Amendis in 2022, Terrial is expanding its range of organic and mineral fertilizers for field crops, specialized crops, landscaping and the consumer market.
